DIY Embroidery Top Wooden Stool

We wanted to a customize and make our own DIY wooden stool with a soft cushion top that can be used as an extra seating, a table, or a footstool. The colours we used are inspired by our love for Moroccan and Bohemian designs and colours. We feel this gives the punch of colour we want to make the interior of our home feel brighter even during the long winter seasons!

The Excitement of Machine Embroidery

HE240 brother machine
Machine embroidery is a fun way to add unique touches to our sewing and home décor projects. I found that once we figure out how to setup the machine by switching the embroidery foot, inserting the panel, and embroidery hoop, it becomes simple as pressing a button and changing the thread.

Sewing a Crotchet Hook Case

Sewing a Crotchet Hook Case
I recently invested in a set of crotchet hooks, and really like how comfortable this set of crotchet hooks are. I use these hooks for variety of projects, and wanted to make sure I keep the hooks in one place. Since these hooks did not come with a case, I stitched a crotchet hook case using felt.

Few Books to Keep Us Engaged This Summer

Growing our own vegetables is a relaxing and rewarding experience. Even though we don't always harvest a whole lot because weather plays an important role in this, we find that tending for our vegetable garden becomes addictive.

Denim Basket: Sewn and Fabric Painted

When school's out, it's perfect time for craft camp! Children and parents will enjoy the creative 40 projects in the Craft Camp book published by Lark. The projects include simple beading, sewing, felting, bookmaking and so much more. The book has ideas on how we can create colourful piñatas, eco-friendly mobiles, upcycled necklaces, hats, T-shirts, and many more projects. Children from 6 to 12 will find inspiring ideas in this book. We like the inspiring photographs that were useful when we were trying the projects. I would have preferred if there were more illustrations to accompany the written steps to make it clearer.

Cupcakes Made With Felt

These felt cupcakes look good enough to eat :) I made these following the instructions from the Made by Me book. It would be neat to make these cupcakes, and give as a toy for children to play with, or use it as a pin cushion, or make mini ones to wear as a brooch.  To make a cupcake you will need...

Inspiring Crafting Books

Image of the cozies from Sewing for All Seasons book
Happy National Craft Month everyone :) I enjoy doing a variety of different crafts because it is fun and a good way to add personalized decor in our home or give as gifts. I also like learning new ones, and have been curious to do quilting and needle felting. I have done some projects that closely fall into quilting, but never did the full process of placing the batting etc. I checked out some inspiring needle crafting books 1 2 3 Quilt and Sewing for All Seasons, which has wonderful projects to get us started. I also got the Woolbuddies book to learn and try the hobby of needle felting.

It is very hard to find matching cushion covers and curtains, so I decided to make my own cushion cover to compliment the curtains in our bedroom. Photo Guide to Beading

I am always fascinated by the fabulous things we can do with beads and have bought lots of beads for no reason :)  When I buy the beads I am full of ideas on how I can use them, but never really end up using it because of time, short of materials and tools to finish the project.

When I saw this fabulous Complete Photo Guide to Beading by Robin Atkins, I was excited to see the creative ideas on how I can use the beads that I have been collecting :)
This book is an ultimate reference to beadwork for novice and expert beaders.  The detailed instructions in the book are separated into three parts; stringing, weaving and embroidery.  There are about 28 projects with colourful clear pictures that teach beading techniques.
Some beading work shown in the book include
  • stringing beads on elastic thread and wire to make beautiful jewelry
  • peyote stitch, brick stitch, net weaving and many different stitches
  • crochet and knitting with beads
  • stitching beads to fabric and embroidery
  • using beads in fringes, bezels and for edge stitches
  • explains about other tools and materials we need for the bead projects.
A little bit about beading and beads...
Beading has always been a human fascination and used for adornments.  Beads are and have been a part of every culture and land.  They were once used for barter and trade because of their portability and durability.  The value of the bead was based on age, uniqueness and material.

The author explains the variety of beads in detail and on how to care for them.  To test if beads will fade leave it under direct sunlight, and test it by washing with water and detergent to see if the colour stays the same compared to the original.
Don't leave pearls in plastic bags, as it will release chemicals causing pearls to loose their luster.  To store the pearls leave it in a soft cloth bag or glass jar.
I would recommend this book if you are into beads or want to learn the skills.  This book is available in bookstores and amazon.
