Win a copy of a sewing book: Get Started and Learn Something New

In the beginning of 2013 everyone in our home made plans to do many things this year.  One of the top things in our New Year's resolution list was to learn a new skill.
DK books are helping us to start something new.  They have a wonderful collection of books for us to learn new skills such as
  • Crafting, needlework, beading, sewing, crocheting and knitting
  • Food based; baking, cooking, making cakes and bread
  • Learning to dance
  • Exercising, yoga etc...
  • The list goes on, as there are many wonderful things to learn.
Learning never really stops and these fabulous DK books encourage children and adults to learn.  I really like the formats on DK books and believe they are a worthy investment to have in any home or school.
The step-by-step books are encouraging as it shows how to do things clearly.  The instructions and the type of language they use make it is easy to understand for beginners who are trying to learn the skills.  Even those who have expert knowledge about a certain skill, will like having these DK books to refer to after all we can't remember all the details :)
Here are more detailed reviews of DK books that I have done in the past such as the needlecraft and art book.  I refer to these books quite often to follow patterns and remember things when I am doing crafts.
This book Get Started: Sewing and Learn Something New is a fabulous book to learn how to sew by hand and machine.  It is separated into 3 parts; start simple, build on it and take it further.  I like the structure of this book as it helps us learn or improve our sewing skills.  The step-by-step pictures of the 30 projects and details about materials and tools in the book are useful.
I am planning to do the projects from this book, and looking forward to share them with all of you :)

Duct tape activities and Tape it & Make it book giveaways

Making creative things using duct tape is a fun hobby for all ages.  My daughter likes using duct tape to do activities and she made this hair tie and gave it as a gift for my birthday.
Duct tape has been around since the 1940s and was originally used as an adhesive for ammunition cases during World War II because of it water resistant qualities.  The military used it for quick fixes on jeeps etc.  Eventually duct tape became available in hardware stores where plumbers and builders gave its current name "Duct tape".
Now craft stores have a variety of colourful duct tape.
I made this decorative bow following the instructions from Tape it & Make it book by Richela Fabian Morgan.  This bow would be wonderful handmade touch to put on gifts or to decorate the home/class etc.
This book has over 100 creative project ideas...
  • Duct Tape Accessories- wallets, sandals, watch strap and more
  • Duct Tape Clothing- apron, necktie, mini skirt, tool belt, and more
  • Duct Tape Flowers- roses, iris, water lilies, and more
  • Duct Tape Animals- turtle, duck, lion's head, puppy, and more
  • Megativities- skyscraper, Rubik's Cube, and more
When doing activities with duct tape...
  • First clean a formica or melamine table top with a damp cloth to remove dust before starting to work.
  • Clean the craft knife or scissors right after the project is finished, use a little bit of mineral oil or petroleum jelly to clean easily.
  • Keep the tapes dust-free in a transparent bin so you can see the different coloured tape without opening/closing the box.
This book is available in bookstores and Amazon.  We can follow the author on Facebook to see more creative activities.

2 people in Canada can win this book Tape it & Make it book by entering through the rafflecopter below.  This giveaway ends on Dec 1st.

Movies for the holidays: Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Ice Age

Some upcoming movies that would be wonderful to watch during the holidays :)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days will be available on December 18th.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid is based on the popular book series and is wonderful movie for the whole family.  We enjoy watching part 1 and 2 many times :) so we are eagerly looking forward to the 3rd one.  In this movie, Greg, a.k.a Wimpy kid's dad threatens to send him to military school if he doesn’t stay out of trouble.  Greg finds all-new ways to land himself in the doghouse.  For starters, Greg’s in over his head when he pretends to work at the swanky country club where Rowley’s family has a membership.  Things don’t go much better on a father-son camping trip with the Wilderness Explorers, and then there’s the Heffley’s new dog, Sweetie, who fetches even more trouble for Greg in this hilarious family movie.
We are also excited to see what bonus features will be in-store :)

Ice Age: Continental Drift is another wonderful movie that children will enjoy.  It comes out on December 11th.
A little synopsis: Sub-zero heroes Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon a high-seas adventure after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they try to reunite with their herd. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

Until the movie releases here are some fun printable activities for children such as drawing the characters, connecting, patterns, finding hidden objects (click on the images below to make it big).

If you would like to win these movies :) keep following the upcoming posts...

Architecture book with Green living ideas

Architecture Laid Bare is a book by architect Robert Brown Butler.  This book educates and inspires home builders and remodellers.  The practical ways explained in the book will help us achieve comfort and understanding about the design and simple green architecture improvements for our homes and offices.

The book explains new and best ideas for modern building's design and construction.  Here are some of the things the author talks about

1. When working with contractors it is better for us to know the vocabulary, which will allow us to negotiate successfully.  When on construction site, he advises that if we wear safe hard hat and work boots we will be treated like an overseer and not an intruder by the builders.

2. CFL (Compact fluorescent lights) are not better that incandescent lights, when it is less than 60 degrees outdoors and are turned on/off a lot.  He suggests that we use luminous escape route trim by adding photoluminescent tape to our baseboards that doesn't use any energy.

3.  Don't be tempted by people who promote solar panels if there isn't enough sunshine on your roof because of trees, building etc.

4.  For those rare occasions when the power fails we don't need expensive generators rather a power-outage kit that includes a dozen candles with holders, flashlights with extra batteries, a bucket to fill water and canned food will be helpful.

5.  A fireplace insert that burns logs and paper trash that has an operable damper and glass doors is 50 to 75 percent efficient and easier to operate than conventional fireplaces.

6.  Locate a house on a convex terrain that has a ridge slope, which will descend 1/2" per foot for 10 feet.

7. Mold that appears on the exterior walls or sidings is caused by airtight vapour barriers that keep moisture laden air from migrating through the wood frame that rots the wood.  Stripping the siding and replacing the Tyvek with tarpaper and installing new siding would thicken the exterior and insulate more.

8.  Replace "fat" furniture with compact items so it takes less space.

9.  Make indoor space efficient by converting wasted spaces such as bottom of stairs into hallway library or shelving.

10.  Install smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fire exit signs, fit a sink faucet on each floor with spigot thread so the hose can be screwed in.

There are black and white pictures and diagrams in the book, here is a link to the index of the book.  This is a good book for anyone thinking of renovating, building or buying a home or solving or eliminating architectural problems.  This book is available on amazon

CAT Job Site Machines toy giveaway

The weather is becoming cooler and we need to find toys that encourage our children's imagination and at the same time teach them about the world around them.  These CAT style Job site machines will be enjoyed by all the children, especially boys as they imitate construction sites and play.
I like how strong this bulldozer is built, so there aren't any loose or sharp parts that come out as children play.  We like everything about this toy.  The only thing I found hard was removing the toy out of the box; I wish we didn't need screwdrivers to take it out of the box :)
The toy is constructed in a well thought out manner as it has motorized driving features with push buttons on top of the bulldozer, so it can go forward and reverse.  There is also a lever to make the pulley in the machine go up and down.

I enjoyed watching my son show me how everything in this bulldozer works and all the things he can do with it.  There are working double signal lights that flash and a stop button that interrupts the vehicle from moving as well.   My son enjoys the sound effects and the instruction of the foreman when he presses the buttons.

I appreciate that the designers of the toy thought about the parents and put in a mute button on the bottom of the toy so it can be played without the sound :)  The toy comes with the 3AA batteries that are needed for the sound and motorized driving.
This toy has become my son's favourite.
There is a wide assortment of these machines such as dump trucks, wheel loaders and excavators available at Amazon, Kmart, Walmart, Toys R Us and Target.

Giveaway
This is a wonderful toy for any child, and I am glad to host a giveaway that ends on October 26th, open to everyone in Canada and US.  Please enter through the rafflecopter below.

The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Giveaway

The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Valarie Budayr & Roscoe Welply is a fabulous enhanced eBook for children.  The 174 pages of this eBook is entertaining and educational.  The animations, games, recipes, videos are fun for children and parents.  This interactive eBook walks us through the famous children's story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, although this guide is not associated with Roald Dahl's book.
The activities in the guide give us the opportunity to stop, think, make crafts, cook, laugh and learn.  This engaging guide allows us to "jump" inside the pages.  There are over 20 crafts and activities such as creating Gobstopper Gum and Chocolate Rivers, handmade Willy Wonka hats and many more.  The illustrations in the guide bring wonder and amazement through Willy Wonka's world.  My children and I enjoyed the fun activities in this interactive eBook.  We thought it was easy to follow and understand as we enjoyed reading and learning.  We like the videos in the book as it helped us see the explained activities.  My children also enjoyed the special effects on some of the pages.

One of the activities in the guide was to decorate marshmallows with edible paint.  To decorate different faces in the marshmallows we will need...
marshmallows
edible paint or edible gel
straws, pasta, toothpick optional

Using edible paint decorate the marshmallows.  After making the faces, children can build towers or shapes with the marshmallows using straws, pasta or toothpicks.

Building with the marshmallows and toothpicks was lots of fun as we talked about 3D shapes, structure and about building.
With this interactive book we can have fun at our own pace and experience the story.  It is beautifully written and illustrated children's book that will allow children and adults to imagine as the ebook brings art, literature and technology together.

Learning Through Play with LEGO DUPLO

Large Brick Box
My children enjoy learning and playing with LEGO.  I think the best and easiest way to learn is through play.  My son is a big fan of LEGO DUPLO and spends lots of his time building, creating and discovering many ways he can use the LEGO pieces to make things.

I like having toys like LEGO DUPLO because these learning toys are valuable as children think and manipulate objects to build things.  I think this type of unstructured learning is beneficial to parents and children.  We can spend quality time teaching, building and learning about what children are thinking.  When children get positive feedback and encouragement from us they feel excited, and we too feel really happy about the creative things they build.

Children tend to relate things they see in daily life when they play, I like that LEGO DUPLO keeps their products colourful, detailed and make the characters, animals, train, farms in the sets something that children can relate to.

I like the size of the LEGO DUPLO bricks.  The products are aimed for children over the age of 1 1/2 years.  We don't have to worry about children accidentally putting the pieces in their mouth because the pieces are big and easy for children to hold on to; however, as with anything use with care and watch as the little ones play :)  LEGO helps children develop their fine motor skills and become creative.
Bricks and Books
I like the idea of having a book to go with the LEGO pieces.  I was able to teach my son to follow each page of the book as we read the story.  I also got his help in building and finding the correct piece that were shown in the book to match the LEGO.  I like how we get to read and play at the same time, so reading becomes a natural part of play.  Children learn to match 2D shapes on the book with the 3D LEGO pieces at a young age with toys like this.  It is easy to follow the illustrations and become engaged in the story of this book about a caterpillar and his friends.

Play with letters
My son is learning his alphabets and it fun to learn with these colourful bricks with letters and matching pictures.  My daughter and son try to find the letters in the alphabet and have found so many ways to play with these useful LEGO DUPLO pieces.
Large Brick Box
Children will enjoy getting creative with this fun collection of bricks that come in a sturdy, reusable storage container with a transparent lid that makes clean up time easy.  The set includes a book of building instructions and inspirations.  The box has special elements to create rolling cars, planes, houses that allow children to become creative.
I enjoyed capturing these memories with the Samsung Wi-Fi Digital Camera.

Learn through play Contest
