Crotchet cowl

To make the cowl colourful use a thread with different colours. The cowl should be easy to put and remove over the head, and remember it will stretch a little. So the length can be adjusted.

It is easy to make this cowl, chain 45 and single crotchet every line to measure 26". Then attach the sides together.

This can be done the same way knitting and then attach the short sides together by stitching with a needle or crotchet.

Flower chains to celebrate with

straws cut into 2"
twine thread
shapes of flowers in different colours cut from printer paper
thick embroidery needle

Use the needle and thread the twine. This needle is safer because it is not sharp. Thread the straw and flowers to any length that will be easier to put and remove ones it is tied around the neck.

Cushion covers

These cushion covers will take less than 10 minutes to make.

outdoor or drapery material
scissors
thread
ruler or measuring tape
buttons optional

Measure the size of the cushion then fold the cloth according to the diagram below and cut the cloth.

I didn't put the exact measurements because the same method can be used for any size cushion or pillow.
Measure the cushion then fold the cloth and cut the three sides, when cutting make sure that one of the side is at least 3" longer so this piece can be tucked in and optionally buttons can be stitched. The above diagram will help when cutting and stitching.

For this project I used outdoor material from a fabric store and the cushion inside was pre made. The same method can also be used to make cushions and put filling in it, if you want to put filling there is no need to keep that extra length on one of the sides. Instead stitch all the sides.

Happy sewing :)

Wooden coasters

pre cut wooden pieces
acrylic paint
paint brushes
water to clean brushes
newspaper to protect surface
varnish for acrylic paint to seal optional

This craft is suitable for 2 1/2 years and up.
These pre cut wooden pieces are available in craft sections in craft shops, hardware stores or dollar stores. If not, can use any cut pieces of wood.

First paint a thick coat in any colour. Let it dry completely. Then paint flowers or anything preferred and let it dry.

Can put varnish to seal after the paint dries, I didn't do this step on these coasters.

Instead of coasters this can be used as a wall hanging by using picture hanging hardware.

Using books with young children and making a toy

Books are the best way to introduce children to new aspects in life, such as welcoming a new baby into the family.

I used this book "Our new baby," when I was expecting my son, to make my daughter feel comfortable and to talk to her about the baby. It made it easier to talk about what we should expect and things that she can do to help... such as playing with the baby, helping out when we change the baby's clothes.

These types of books make older siblings feel happy and proud on what role they will be playing as a family. They won't feel isolated when they are involved in choosing toys and clothes for the baby, instead it will be exciting for them to want a baby in the house.

This book is available here. Here is an activity to go with the book.

My daughter and I made this rattle using recyclable material, I would suggest this activity for 3+ just to be in the safe side.
Even older children can make this to learn about musical instruments and sound.

1 paper towel or toilet paper roll
crayola paint or any paint
stickers or markers to decorate

to fill
pasta
different types of dried beans, rice
beads

Cover one side of the paper roll with duct tape, make sure it is secure. Then allow your child to fill the roll with whatever they prefer; let them experiment with the sounds they like to hear when they shake the rattle.
And then cover the other end with duct tape.

Decorate with paint, markers and stickers. Let it dry and then play with it as a rattle or a musical instrument to learn about sounds.

Spring flowers in a pot

What you need to make this lovely pot of flowers to welcome Spring...

small branch from a tree
clay or recycled plastic pot
paper or modelling clay to put inside the pot
tissue paper different colours for flowers and leaves
white glue
paint optional

Put the branch inside the pot and place paper around it and colour it brown or green. Or put the branch inside the pot and place brown or green modelling clay inside the pot to secure the branch.
Cut different colours of tissue paper into small squares or pieces and pinch it into flowers and stick it onto the branch with glue. Using green tissue make leaves similar to how the flowers were made.
Colour the pot, branch and paper inside the pot if you like.
This craft can be kept for a long time and it is a lovely activity of any age group. With younger children supervision and help is required. This craft is inspired several years ago by a magazine or internet I am not sure and I have made these beautiful pots since then.
