Fragrant Rice and Loblaws Thanksgiving contest

fragrant rice
I plan to serve a fragrant rice dish during this year's Thanksgiving meal. This recipe is simple to make and will go well with all the dishes you plan to serve. It will also go well with the sweet and spicy pineapple side dish I plan to make. Although, we can prepare the rice on the stove top I like to use the rice cooker, as it will be ready within a few minutes while we prepare the rest of the meal.

1 tbsp ghee
1 1/2 cups basmati rice
2" cinnamon sticks
2 bay leaves
2 cloves
2 cardamom seeds
1/2 tsp salt to taste
1/4 tsp saffron
water

Wash and drain the rice.

Heat the ghee in the rice cooker, then add the whole spices and sauté for a minute. Use a spoon that will not scrape the bottom of the rice cooker. Then add the drained rice and saffron and sauté until the rice is transparent.

Add water that is about 1" higher than the rice and cover and cook the rice. Once the rice is cooked toss it, remove the whole spices, and serve hot.

If you are using the stove top to prepare the rice instead of the rice cooker, follow the same instructions and cook the rice on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Once it is cooked keep it covered for about 20 minutes before serving it hot.

  7. That rice sounds delicious! We always go in on a big bag of Basmati rice with my parents, so it's nice to find new recipes to use! I think my parents would love this recipe too, I'm going to pass it along to them as well.
