Books for Young Readers

cozy classics
Cozy Classics written by Jack and Holman Wang are meant for babies and toddlers. Cozy Classics tells the story line of English literature classic novels such as Pride and Prejudice and Moby Dick using simple words. Children can grasp the basics of the story line by looking at the 12 pictures and reading the 12 words in these board books.

cozy classics
When I chose this series, I assumed it would have sentences instead of words. I would have preferred that the words that were chosen in the book to be a little more relevant or useful for young children. For example a young child learning to talk according to me has no use in learning the word "marry" at this time. In my opinion, I don't think this series conveys the story with just one word per page, and I find the words in the book are irrelevant. The only thing I like in this series is the needle felted scenes that were used as images.
love is all around
Love is all around the world, and Love is all around Canada are similar books written by Wendi Silvano and illustrated by Joanna Czernichowska. These books have the same wording, and illustrations. The book about Canada focuses on famous places within Canada and the book about the World has different places from around the world. The message in the book is how important and precious the love we get from our families for all of us, and how similar every family is around the world.
farm book
Touch and Explore Farm book by Twirl is illustrated by Xavier Deneux. I think this an excellent book for children, as it teaches them about farm animals - what farm animals eat, their features and physical characters, sounds they make, and more. Since the pages have touch and feel material, as well as areas where the children can open the flaps, I think it is an engaging book that children will enjoy exploring.
summer walk
Summer Walk by Virginia Brimhall Snow is a beautiful book that children will enjoy, as they learn to identify twenty four different bugs. Children will get excited learning the names of these bug that they may encounter in their environment during warm weather and outdoor adventures.
royal wedding disaster
Ever since my daughter watched The Princess Diaries, when my children play I overhear them talking about Genovia and the princess. The Princess Diaries is one of our favourite movies. When I saw the Royal Wedding Disaster by Meg Cabot, also the author of The Princess Diaries I too was excited to take a look at the book. My daughter eagerly finished reading this fun book. This book is recommended for school age children, teens, tweens, and adults. She felt that she was able to imagine the place and all the things that were happening in this novel such as having fun with friend. The story in this novel is about Olivia getting ready for her sister Mia's wedding. It is an interesting read about Olivia moving to Genovia, living with her royal family, and training to be a princess.
it aint so awful falafel
I thoroughly enjoyed reading a funny novel by Firoozeh Dumas, It Ain't So Awful Falafel. I had a hard time putting this book down until I finished reading it. While reading this novel I laughed, smiled, cried, learned, thought, and agreed with many of the topics the author pointed out. The novel is beautifully written and made me feel like I was there. The story is based in California during late 1970s. It is about an Iranian-American teenage girl, Zomorod also known as Cindy. The story is written in the perspective of this girl's life, while she is living in the USA during the Iranian crisis.

The novel address a lot of topics such as fitting in with American society, the differences in the culture, making friends, importance of family, how politics impacts individual lives, the affects of ignorant people on others, and more. I recommend this novel for middle grade children to adults. I am looking forward to reading the other novels by Firoozeh; Funny in Farsi and Laughing Without an Accent.
Children will enjoy reading through and thinking about their future in this beautiful letter and envelope kit - Letters To Me When I Grow Up.
As children write down the answers to the questions and prompts in each of the letters, it will turn into beautiful memories. This book is a neat idea to encourage writing skills in school age children.
totally toronto
Totally Toronto by Peg Connery-Boyd has lots of puzzles, games, colouring pages, word jumbles, crossword puzzles, and more. This would be a wonderful book of activities for children to do in leisure at home or to take on road trips and when travelling.

  7. Except for the Cozy Classics series, these look like great books. I think the Cozy Classics would require parents to do a lot of discussion to make them at all relevant to babies or toddlers.
