It Is Officially Spring, Time To Spot Bugs and Butterflies

bee
Today is the official first day of spring, but the weather outside is nothing like spring.  Everyone in my family is missing the warm weather, the beautiful sunshine, flowers, birds and even the bugs.
As an adult I am not a big fan of bugs, however when I was little it was a different story as my brothers and I use to collect flies and look for other types of bugs in our garden... thinking back I feel bad about this activity of ours as it wasn't cool for the bugs.
My children are big fans of insects as well, and they are both in the age of exploring about them.  When they saw this book Spot the Bug by Tom Jackson they became very excited.

Usually when my daughter helps us out in the garden, I have to watch her and ask her not to play with the worms.

And as the weather gets warmer I also have to make sure that my little ones aren't running after busy bugs like bees and wasps that could sting them; we all know that getting bitten by a bug is not fun.

I like the detailed pictures and the interesting information that is found in this book, as it helps us identify the different types of bugs.  The book says that insects have 3 sections, the head, thorax and abdomen.  This is unlike spiders that have 2 sections, the head and the thorax together and the abdomen.

My children enjoy looking at the colourful pictures and placing the correct stickers from the back of the book in the indicated spots.
Some interesting facts from the book:
  • Green Darner dragonfly known as the "darning needle" is the fastest bug in the air.
  • True Katy did is a bug that is related to crickets.  It is named after its call, which makes the sound "Katy did" followed by "Katy didn't."
  • Adult cicadas do not feed and the males spend their days making a call that sounds like a motorized saw.
  • The buzzing noises of bees come from the fast flapping of their wings.  The flapping helps these insects to keep their muscles warm on chilly days.
Bugs are an important part of our eco-system and learning about them is a very important, so take a look at this informative book that will teach everything you need to know about bugs.

  1. I remember working in my mom's garden with her. I was always digging the grubs out from the dirt. Back then I was fearless, now my toes curl & I cringe just thinking about grub worms!

  8. My girls are super interested in insects and spiders some days but other days they are scared of them all. We have found some interesting bugs over the last several weeks, put them in jars and dug around online until we could identify them.
