Epoxy Resin Projects You Can Do at Home

epoxy resin artwork
If you are looking for a creative way to spruce up your home, resin is the answer. Resin is a material that can be used to achieve a wide range of effects, from adding depth and character to furniture to making a DIY project more fun. It is an easy way to add warmth and personality to your space.

What is Epoxy Resin?
Resin is most commonly used as glue to holds things together. Natural resins is usually seen in trees and insects.

There are two components in epoxy resin kits; one part resin and one part hardener. When it is mixed, the mixture heats up, causing the resin to harden or cure. Because the combination is strong, it makes for some functional projects.

Why Use Epoxy Resin?
Epoxy resin is excellent because it is flexible in its liquid state, allowing it to be poured and molded into various shapes, but when the hardener is added, it hardens to become rock solid! This means it's ideal for repairing leaks, repairing broken parts, sealing worktops, and, most importantly, making customized crafts!

How to Use Epoxy Resin
You must take certain precautions, just like with any other chemical, to ensure your safety. It is possible to use epoxy resin safely and successfully at home. However, to protect yourself, your family, and your pets, basic safety principles must be followed.

Wear protective gloves and work in a well ventilated area. Not all resin is food safe; make sure the one you have can be used if you plan to make serving boards or cake stands.

Epoxy Resin Maintenance
Epoxy resin is generally strong and requires only minor maintenance and it is not easily broken or stained. However, it will begin to yellow if exposed to sunlight over time. The sun's UV light degrades the epoxy polymers, causing discolouration. Make sure to protect the resin surfaces from sunlight.

You can use mineral oils to clean and maintain the epoxy resin surface weekly or monthly. Just be mindful if you use too much, the surface will dull and become hazy. If you spill something accidentally, you can clean the surface with paint thinner or acetone. This will ensure that the surface is spotless and safe to use in the future. Just be aware of the fumes produced by these two cleaners.

Here are 4 easy yet beautiful epoxy resin projects you can craft at home.

1. Resin countertops
Consider epoxy resin resurfacing if your old countertops need a facelift, but you don't want to spend the money to replace them. Epoxy resin can withstand the rigours of a kitchen environment because it is so strong and somewhat heat-resistant when cured. It's also food-safe, non-toxic, shiny, and easy to clean.

Remember not to place hot pans on your resin refinished countertops directly.

2. Coasters
There are many coaster molds online which are used to make beautiful and unique coasters.

3. Trays
You can make unique and exciting trays with all sorts of ideas. Here is a tutorial on making one by splitting a piece of wood!

4. Resin games
Epoxy resin crafts are all about having fun. You can find a variety of game molds, including dominoes, chess, and dice molds, all online or on Etsy.
