Ways to Encourage Creativity in Your Kids

createwithmom craft
Kids are naturally curious, and as a parent, watching them grow and discover their passion is fulfilling. Encouraging them to build their creativity shows your interest and makes you an active part in supporting their development. Statistics reveal that as kids grow older, they may become less creative if there is no intentional effort to build and sustain their creativity. Experts recommend striking a balance between engaging your kids in various activities geared towards building their imagination and giving them the creative space to grow. With the practical tips below, you can help develop and encourage creativity in your kids.

Treasure their work
Praising your kids whenever they create something is a great way to boost their self-esteem and encourage them to discover their talents. Aside from verbal affirmations, how you respond to their work can also make a lot of difference. If they have some drawings or made crafts, you can hang some around your home to let them know you appreciate their work. It’s also a way of reminding them of their progress.

As technology advances, you can also store some of their work digitally in a folder so you can show it to them later on and keep it for a very long time. Suppose you've also taken some memorable pictures together and often edit several of these photos using programs like Photoshop. In that case, you can find out more about what’s a scratch disk and other storage mediums, so you can safely store all your files and go back if you want to make some more edits.

Allow them to play around
Allowing your kids to explore helps boost their imagination and helps them learn a lot as well. This stage involves both their cognitive and motor skills. It doesn't only end with them discovering new things but also playing around with tangible items. For instance, as they play around with toys, they may start getting creative by building something, arranging things according to a particular pattern, etc. They may initially not have any idea what they're doing, but they'll have a more focused approach and get new ideas as time goes on. This hands-on approach will help channel their creativity and give them some independence as well. Remember not to limit them to only things you may assume they are interested in or tie them down to just a few activities.

Get involved
As a parent, you may sometimes worry whether you're too overbearing on your kids. However, there are practical ways you can strike a balance between being involved and allowing them to be independent. You can set aside some time during the week to spend quality time with your kids and show interest in what they are doing. That way, you always know what's new with them and can help them when they need it, but at the same time, you allow them to be themselves and learn some things on their own. You can ask questions, like how they came up with their idea in the first place, and encourage them to let them know they're doing well and how happy you're with the effort they are putting.

Helping to cultivate your child's creativity can be fun and straightforward, and with these tips, you can help encourage them to build their skills and be themselves.

  5. I agree with this post so much. I love seeing the art my kids create and we do display it for awhile. Also agree about being overbearing, constantly have to remind myself to not force my image of how things should look on them.
