Branching Narrative Episodes on Netflix

Netflix launches the first "branching" narrative episode, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, in which the viewer gets to decide where to take the story next. Children have the opportunity to make choices and create non-linear adventures that will lead to two pre-determined main storylines. Buddy Thunderstruck (July 14) and Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout (next year) will be added to the "branching" narrative episodes.

While watching the shows the audience is given an opportunity to make choices, which would change the outcome of the show. The interactive show will allow children to think and make decisions instead of just watching shows. It will teach children to understand that their decisions and choices influence what happens in the future, and different choices have different consequences.

With new technology comes new challenges for families such as
  • Children may become curious, and would want to watch the shows again to see how different choices they pick uncover a different storyline.
  • When siblings watch together they will have to collaborate and make decisions together to avoid conflict such as which side to choose.
Since there are pros and cons, it is best for parents to have conversations and set ground rules among siblings, for example discuss how much time is spent watching shows compared to being active outdoors before young children step into the world of "branching" narrative episodes.
