Our Adventures at the Scenic Caves

scenic caves
Scenic Caves located in Collingwood, Ontario is a four-season attraction that is well-worth visiting with family and friends. We spent over three hours during our visit this summer, as we enjoyed an array of family friendly attractions such as exploring the caves, feeding fish, mining for gemstones, playing mini-golf, taking a tractor-wagon ride, walking on the suspension bridge, and more. Watch the video below to see a glimpse of the adventures at the Scenic Caves
We loved our self-guided exploration of the ancient caves and caverns. Experiencing the geological features of the Niagara Escarpment up-close by feeling it and touching it made us understand a bit of the natural and cultural history of the 450-million-year old geology.

As we went into the "natural refrigerator" where the early natives may have stored their food, we were able to feel the coolness of it. Even during the summer heat the inside of cave is about 4 degrees Celsius, as the heat rose during the day the stones did become slippery. We were able to immediately feel the coolness of the ice caves as we went in.

Discovering traces of the Ice Age and wondering how the Paleo-Indian hunters, the Huron-Petun First Nation people, Champlain, and the Jesuits may have once lived and taken advantage of the environment is interesting.

We enjoyed hiking carefully through the paths and were excited to see the lookout points that allowed us to take in the beauty of the 10,000 sq. km. of Georgian Bay.

They also have Canada's longest Thunderbird Twin Zipline, which is for riders over 10 years between 48" or 4 feet and 50 lbs. to 82" or 6 feet 10 inches and 260 lbs.

Our children loved the excitement of mining for gemstones, as they got to wash off the sand and pebbles to find semi-precious stones. Bringing these stones home with them is a wonderful souvenir.

Another highlight of our trip was feeding the Brook and Rainbow Trout. We purchased the fish food, which is available right by the pond and enjoyed watching the fish jump up, as we tossed the fish food.

The 18-hole mini golf is another family activity we enjoyed. We found the challenges of each hole to be exciting.

Taking the ride on Rocky the train from the Big Rock Railroad Station gave us a tour of wood carved animals such as bears, otters, and more at the Scenic Caves. This is a fun tour for everyone in the family.

Our children enjoyed playing in the Children's Playground, as they had a geometric climbing rope structure, the mini suspension bridge, tight rope walk, gyro spinner, climbers, and swings.

Instead of walking about 10 minutes to and from the suspension bridge, we took the Tractor-Wagon ride. Walking on the longest 420" suspension bridge that opened in 2003 was super exciting for all of us.

The sturdy wire fencing around the walkway makes it safe even for young children to walk on their own. We enjoyed the wobbly feel of the bridge. The view is spectacular!
