Experiencing March Break Fun at the Royal Ontario Museum

To celebrate March Break (March 8 – 16) the Royal Ontario Museum has a number of special events planned to engage kids, parents, grandparents, and caregivers. My family and I had a wonderful global adventure through the ROM’s galleries, by stamping our ROM Passports this March Break while learning about the world around us.
Taking the journey inside the gates of the Forbidden City with the ROM’s new exhibit, Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors was wonderful and a must-see.

They also had an area where children can build a city with LEGO.
At the First Peoples gallery children were taught how to make their own beaded jewellery using looms.
We checked out the Earth Rangers show, which is always awesome and truly inspiring on the little things we can do to protect the wild. We explored and learned from the experts about animal artifacts and specimens at touch tables throughout the ROM.
Being dinosaur fans, we spent lots of time at the area dedicated to learning about finding dinosaur bones, and about what archaeologist and paleontologists do. Children enjoyed dressing up in dinosaur costumes, feeling fossils, weighing artifacts they dug and writing about their research and more. These kinds of activities teach children what happens in the real world and how museums preserve and present things that happen such as in history.
We saw beautiful gem stones like the above blue sapphire stone mined in Sri Lanka called the Star of Lanka that shows a six-rayed star. We also saw a variety of other cool stones and meteorites.
At the Mining Station there were lots of other information such as how minerals are used in everyday products such as cosmetics.
My children enjoyed touching a space rock, and posing for pictures while standing on an actual piece of the Moon.
They also enjoyed learning to write their name in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Ancient Greek, and in cuneiform like a Babylonian.
We also checked out the amazing artwork of the winner and runner-ups for the Doodle 4 Google exhibition, glad to see the artistic talent of our children.
There was a wonderful wild life photography exhibit that we enjoyed looking at. The vibrant talent of many photographers around the world is displayed, and it inspires me to continue my enjoyment for taking photographs of nature. As a parent, I am thankful that the Royal Ontario Museum is presenting information in a fun way to teach both children and adults about history.

  6. Looks fun! I LOVE museums, been way too long since I've visited one. We don't have one like what you have but I want to take my kids to the Science centre here in Calgary one of these days. Its been years since I've gone and I think the kids would have a blast. On my "to do" list for hopefully this summer is to take them for a day to the Royal Tyrrel museum. Haven't been there in probably 12 years.
