Get ready for winter with Pediped

Get ready for winter with reliable boots for children from Pediped. We want our children to be as active as they can during any weather, especially in winter. To be active and enjoy, I think it is important that children have proper footwear.

Pediped meets all the things we as parents demand :) and their shoes are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association. Pediped footwear are made with quality products that will keep our children's feet protected, comfortable and warm. Pediped has a variety of boots that are stylish, so children will not refuse to wear :)
I like that Pediped puts a lot of thought into their products as they only make footwear for children's growing feet. This Flex Cruz Pediped boots was my son's first choice because it has his favourite colour red. These boots are waterproof and withstands temperatures as cold as -20C. The cushioned insole makes the boots feel real cozy and protects the feet from frostbites. My son eagerly wears these Pediped boots as the weather has been chilly and windy.
These shoes are lightweight and durable, which allows children to be active. I found the Flex Fit System in the boots useful as it gives an additional insole that can be inserted for a snug fit and can be removed as our children's feet grow.
I am very happy that these boots have slip-resistant flexible soles, which are not stiff so children can move their feet naturally without trouble. It is also easy to clean and maintain the boots.

These Pediped boots are made with a combination of water-resistant leather and nylon material. I am glad that the boots have velcro, which makes it easy for my little one to put and remove on his own especially at school. The fabulous collection of Pediped boots can be bought at these retail stores or online.

Floppets will travel anywhere with us

Floppets are cool, creative, flexible little animal characters that are attached to a Velcro strap.  They would go anywhere you take them :)  We love every character of these cute collectible Floppets.
Floppets are available in a variety of bright and vibrant characters from animals, birds, aliens, sea creatures, teapots and many more.  Both boys and girls will like collecting and attaching these "pets" to their belongings.
Floppets can be attached to anything we want such as slippers/flip flops, shoes, bag, lunch boxes, pencils, literally anywhere!

Floppets are on a Velcro strap that can be linked so a few Floppets can attach together and be worn as bracelets, rings etc.  My daughter is very careful with her "pets", as she makes sure they are safely hanging onto her belongings, hand and hair.
This toy/accessory is for anyone over 4 years.  I like attaching these cute pets to my handbag and key tag as well :)
We can include Floppets as a reward children can earn, when they do their chores and homework.  Each Floppet is about $2 and can be purchased in these places.

Check out Floppets on Facebook to see pictures of all the places Floppets get attached to.  Interesting news of Floppets can be followed on twitter.

Decorate your own Playhouse

Cascades launches My Pretty Playhouse that is made in Canada with 100% recycled cardboard.  Cascades partners with Habitat for Humanity to build houses for families in need.  For each playhouse sold Cascades will donate $2 to the organization in Canada and US.
Click on the image to enlarge
Girls and boys will enjoy this small and affordable playhouse.  The playhouse measures about 37"x29"x54".  It is available at Boutique Cascades, and they deliver for free.  It fits nicely into smaller areas.  It is designed for children over three years.  This safe playhouse is easy to assemble by an adult, as the instructions are clear.  When no longer needed, it can be recycled.
This creative, customizable playhouse has become a favourite for my children.  They have spent many days decorating every part of this house inside and outside; still planning on adding more.  This entertaining house stimulates children's creativity and is a wonderful activity to do especially as the weather is becoming cold weather.

We Day: Be the change

Give the Canadian penny that appeared in 1853, a powerful farewell before it goes out of circulation. Students and schools were given penny bags on We Day to collect $25 in pennies, which will provide a permanent source of clean water to one person in developing countries. From November 1st to December 21st, then again in Spring 2013 RBC branches across Canada will collect these penny filled bags making it easy for us to collect the pennies without counting or rolling.  All we have to do is fill up the bags and drop it off at any RBC branch.
Free the Children is an international organization started by Marc and Craig Kielburger. This organization empowers youth to remove barriers that prevent them from begin active local and global citizens. This program educates, engages and empowers youth in North America and UK.

We Day brings big issues to the forefront and changes the value system of everyone, especially the youth as they become leaders. There are over 1.7 million young people from 45 countries involved in this initiative to make a positive change at home and abroad. In the 2011/2012 school year youth raised $6 million for local and global causes.  They invested more than 1.7 million hours of time volunteering.

I support this type of active awareness and education, and believe it is important for our children to be involved in these positive changes. I attended the We Day event at the Air Canada Centre, Toronto and was able to meet celebrities and activists such as Martin Sheen, Nelly Furtado and Jacob from Hedley. We listened and saw speakers and performers such as Molly Burke, Romeo A. Dallaire, Robin Wiszowaty, Shawn Desman, Spencer West, The Tenors, Tyler Shaw, Al Gore, Jake Zeldin, Jennifer Hudson, Jesse Giddings, Justice Murray Sinclair and Justin Trudeau.

We Day will be held in 8 Canadian cities this school year; Toronto (Sep 28), Vancouver (Oct 18), Alberta (Oct 24), Manitoba (Oct 30), Waterloo Region (Nov 14), Montreal (Nov 20) and National We day in Ottawa (Apr 29).

The generous sponsors RBC and TELUS make We Day completely free for students and educators.  TELUS has a Phones for Good campaign where they will give $25 (up to $650,000) from the sale of every TELUS Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Ace Q to Free the Children.

They also have an Earn your way to We Day campaign. TELUS gives $1 (up to $100,000) to Free the Children for every submission from the youth across Canada when they tell what they are doing to make a difference in their community.

Youth between 13 and 17 can submit their video on how they would partner with a local charity to make a positive change in their community and win $20,000 to put their idea into action.

MuchMusic will air highlights on November 11th at 7pm EST and CTV will air on November 24th at 7pm EST.
The international projects such as "Adopt a village" done by Free the Children is a holistic, sustainable model that helps children and their families from the cycle of poverty.  To make an investment in these communities, this project helps develop five of these important parts of the infrastructure.
  1. Education: They make a valuable social investment by concentrating on providing traditional curriculum, healthy homes and business skills.
  2. Clean water and sanitation by providing localized clean water sources and facilities to reduce waterborne diseases.  This source helps the young children that trek to collect water for their families to attend school.
  3. Health: providing medical supplies for health clinics and workshops so the community can treat illness quickly. They provide community gardens and tree planting.  Sports equipment to encourage physical fitness.
  4. Alternative income and livelihood by skill training, financial business training and microcredit loans to help families start small business.
  5. Agriculture and food security provides nutrition programs that give children nutritious food, crop diversification, agricultural training, irrigation and watershed development.
When there is rapid growth in technology it is sad to see that some parts of the world there are people without the essential of life: WATER.  Things we can do to help.
  • Get a penny bag from Free the Children or RBC branch and start collecting.
  • Visit the online water initiative and donate.
  • Purchase a $10 Me to We Artisan handmade unique Rafiki made by Maasai moms in Kenya, which will provide one person access to clean water for a year.
Help Canada use the penny for a good cause that will change the lives of so many people and communities.  The penny is used to make wishes come true, so lets make the wishes of 100,000 people come true.

Ambition’s Not An Awful Word Giveaway

Ambition’s Not An Awful Word is a funny children's book written by the author Zack Zage.  Zack uses himself as the boy in the story that is starting grade four.
This story starts conversation of "who I want to be when I grow up" and "what I want to do".  The rhyming words add to the fun of reading this story.  My daughter liked the references of places and people in the sentences that she was able to infer and remember from other conversations.
Ambition is one of the most important trait that we should encourage in our children, so they can explore different things they like from a young age.  As the book says, ambition is the beginning of everything we accomplish in life.

The beautiful illustrations done by Adam Watkins sparks curiosity in children and opens conversations.  Children will laugh at the pictures and even think about it.  The pictures go in hand with the written words.
We liked the detail in the pictures and the drawings of the characters.  I got lots of questions from my 3 1/2 year old about the pictures i.e. "how come the lady looks so different with big teeth," "why is the boy's eyes so big."

Although this book is intended for children over the age of 6, my little one loved listening to this story and appreciated the pictures and flipped through the book several times.
I like the layout of the book, in which Zack says his ambition in one side and the reality of real life on the other side.  The meanings of unusual words, people mentioned in the story are in the glossary; parents and older children will appreciate this.  Adults will enjoy reading this book as well.

The book ends beautifully as Zack's mother says the moon left a message that "It's OK to dream."
This book is available in stores and amazon.

It's raining fish and spiders

It's Raining Fish and Spiders is a fun, informative exploration of the wonderful world of weather by meteorologist Bill Evans.  The book is good for children over 7 years, although I found it is helpful to answer all the curious questions of younger children.  The collection of facts, stories, experiments and explanations in the book is a good teaching tool for the kids.

This video will give a good insight to the book. The book covers everything from tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, kinds of snowflakes and many more.
I liked reading the weather myths, stories and facts to my kids, and learned a lot of interesting things I didn't know before.
The book includes some experiments and links to websites that have cool experiments, so we can try at home without expensive equipment. The author has used entertaining funny titles that will make everyone want to read.
I liked the research, facts, charts, tables, illustrations and photographs (not coloured).  The author has given precautions on what we should do in a situation i.e. when there is an earthquake, tsunami, tornado etc (God forbid).

Did you know...

  • that no two snowflakes look a like, each one is unique.  Snowflakes are made from pure simple ice crystals.  In cold weather or winter when it rains it is called sleet not hail.
  • The lowest temperature recorded on the planet was -89.2C in Antarctica.  It gets slightly more rainfall than the Sahara desert.  Despite the snow and ice, Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth.
  • When a tornado passes over a lake or small body of water it can sweep up objects of all shapes and sizes and drop it off some distance away; that is the reason the book was named It's raining fish and spiders.

This educational entertaining book is sold on amazon and bookstores.

Reading with children

As parents we can help our children read without tears by making reading a part of their everyday life and fun.  It is important to talk and discuss with children about what they read by asking related questions, to see if they have comprehended what they read or listened to.
Reading something fun everyday with the children brings lots of satisfaction that will become good memories.  Choose a book like this 365 Animal stories and rhymes or another book from the 365 stories and enjoy with your little ones.  This book has a variety of reading media such as folk stories, exciting long and short stories and poetry that will keep children entertained.  My children enjoyed listening to many of the stories and want to listen to some of them over and over.
I liked reading it with my children and was happy to see some stories I remember listening to as a child from my grandmas and mom.

Another note on reading: Every summer Toronto Public library has a reading program that encourages children to have fun and read.  They provide posters and stickers free of charge; so do join this fun learning program.

Doodlepedia

Doodlepedia is a workbook full of fascinating facts and interesting things for children to do over the summer and during their "spare" time.
There are lots of different activities to colour, design and draw.  The mazes, colouring activities, fun facts and drawings of a variety of things will keep the children interested as they learn about animals, sea world, robots, dinosaurs, science, light, reflections, planets, space, facial feelings, weather, technology, ancient civilization and many more.
Did you know...?
  • White is a combination of colours.
  • Tigers hide in shadows of trees to camouflage.
  • Toucan's bill or beak is 8" long.  It is useful for reaching and catching tasty fruit and bugs.  The beak that looks intimidating to predators isn't very strong because it is made out of keratin, the same substance our nails and hair are made of.
The book opens lots of interactive conversations and children's imaginations has they doodle away.
Doodlepedia is available here and Amazon.

On My Honor Girl Scouts

Shannon Henry Kleiber, the author of the book On My Honor wrote this novel like biography, which I enjoyed reading and learned many things.  After reading the book, I do Honor the Girls Scouts and its concept more.  Many of us have heard of, seen or been part of Girl Scouts, but we know little of how girl scouts came to exist.  The author has written lots of stories, funny incidents and information about Juliette Gordon Low, the leader and founder of Girl Scouts.

The author, Shannon is the Girl Scouts leader of her daughter's troop.  She wrote this book because of her curiosity to find out about Daisy; the person that started this "sisterhood" or "girl guides".  Shannon found out lots of interesting things about Daisy from many sources and wrote this book to bring light to this leader.

Juliette Gordon Low, well known as Daisy started the Girl Scouts determined to teach young girls and women to self rely.  Daisy was inspired by the Boy Scouts that was formed and led by Robert Borden Powell.  Daisy has influenced many thousands of young girls and women for hundreds of years.  Her wisdom has helped many women to become leaders.

Over the years Girl Scouts have gone through lots of controversies and changes.  The famous Girl Scout cookies changed their ingredients to make it more healthy, the packaging has become more environmentally friendly as they use paperboard.
The principles of Girl Guides have been debated if it is religious or not religious.  Daisy wanted to make sure the principles and way of life was being taught by family, friends and community and not by the Girl Scout leaders because everyone from all walks of life is accepted to be part of Girl Scouts.
The famous Girls Scouts badges show accomplishment as the girls learn the skill such as cooking, ironing, swimming etc and earn the badges.

I enjoyed learning many things and started to think of strategies that are important to me as a parent.
Sharron shares her research of lots of funny jokes, stories and incidents that happen in Daisy's life.  Sharron also shares her experience as a mother and talks about challenges such as technology and how it has impacted the decisions we make.  Some points I learned from the book that I like to share are below.
  • We need to help out our children to become independent, even if it means they will be messy.
  • Guiding the children will help, not lecturing them.
  • Connecting with the community and begin part of it; seeing beyond people, being eco friendly.
  • Looking at how things are done in the past, adapting to the present and learning the skills from previous generations.
  • Knowing we aren't perfect, and that we all have different strengths.
  • Recognizing people are different and accepting that it is good to be different.
  • Teaching children to be themselves and explaining that if we are all alike it is not a good thing.
  • Becoming self reliant, learning gardening, cooking, needlework that will keep us calm, appreciate nature and become pioneers.
  • Financial security by saving money to take care of ourselves.
  • Being physically strong by taking care of our health, eating a balance diet and water, getting involved in sports and being active.
  • Becoming strong emotionally by helping ourselves.
  • Helping those who are poor, less fortunate, sick, the animals and loving all living things.
  • Recognitions by saying Thank you is more appreciated than financial compensation.  Contributing our time, thoughts, talent is helpful and valuable.
On January 1917 Borden Powell mentioned in his letter to Daisy agreeing, that the girls are mothers of the future who will influence our future generations.
Shannon mentions the Whip it 2009 movie, which is about Girl Scouts and I am planning to watch it.

Everyone should know the Girl Scout's law; this is from Shannon's book:
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and storing, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The book is available at Indigo chapters, amazon and bookstores.

Kidorable hangers

My children like helping me organize most times :) They were really excited to see these cool looking hangers from Kidorable.
These handcrafted wooden hangers are beautiful.  Kidorable has used very vibrant colours.  My daughter said she likes these hangers compared to her regular ones because its colourful.  She hangs her special clothes in these :)
We chose this transportation set, which isn't totally gender specific.  This set of hangers come with 6 hangers; I gave each of my children 3.   My daughter and son chose the 3 that they liked to put in their closet.  Although my little guy thought all the hangers were for him and he didn't want to make a choice.  Kidorable has put their name on the back of these neat looking hangers.

I like that the hangers are sturdy enough to hold children's clothing.  As the hangers are lightweight children can comfortably hang their own clothing.  There are no sharp edges.  It is better to use caution and avoid accidents by giving it to an older child over the age of 3 years/school age, so they have more understanding that these aren't toys as it has a hanger hook.

These hangers from Kidorable would be a lovely gift that will encourage children to organize their clothing.  It would be a cute functional gift for parents to use it in the nursery.  So next time you are looking for a unique gift get these Kidorable hangers which are sold online and are shipped to anywhere in the world.

Kidorable review and giveaway

Kidorable has adorable rainwear for children; I haven't seen cute products like this anywhere.  The children and parents will enjoy their unique, creative, fabulous collection of products.  We like the quality and cuteness of these affordable Kidorable products.

The stitching and the detailed design on the products show good quality.  My son is a big dinosaur fan and knows a lot about dinosaurs, he even scares us by making different dinosaur sounds :)  My little dinosaur came alive with these super cute dinosaur coat and boots.  He loved the pockets, pictures, spikes, the colour and everything about it.  He couldn't stay still with this on :)

Children will want to have these rain gear on them even when there isn't any rain.  I had to convince my son that there will be plenty of opportunities for him to wear the coat when it is raining.

Kidorable has a lovely selection of themed rain coats and rain boots for all the different fans such as pirates, dragon knight, dinosaur, fireman, frog, space hero for boys and ballerina, butterfly, fairy, lady bug, lotus flower, lucky cat and mermaid for girls.  The coats are made out of PVC and have comfortable polymer lining.  The sizes are from 1T to 6x.  The size chart of the site is detailed, which will help us get the correct size.  The coats also come with free hangers that are unique, wooden, lightweight and cute.

The rain/ mud boots made with natural rubber are really soft and pliable, which is comfortable for growing feet.  The sole of the boots have a good grip and it is easy to clean.  My children and I like the details throughout the boots such as the dinosaur face, eyes, teeth, spikes, texture, design and the attractive realistic colours.
Kidorable carries boot sizes from size 5 to youth size 2 that come up to mid calf. If your children are like mine; then you know that they can't avoid puddles/mud so rain boots are a good investment.  These cute comfortable boots will make children want to wear it without complaining :)

As a parent, you will love seeing your cuties in the Kidorable rain coats and boots.  Anyone seeing your children with these kidorable products will compliment how good it looks.

My daughter loves the selection they have for the girls, she wanted this ballerina umbrella and was really excited when she got it.  It isn't just an umbrella; the details and design will bring out the ballerina in the little ones.  We love every part of this 100% nylon umbrella; the pictures, colours, the shape, the cute ribbon on top and the unique comfortable handle.  The umbrella is a good size that is big enough to protect them from the rain.  It would also be good to have when it is sunny.  My ballet queen is trying to find every opportunity to use it; she is out with it in rain and shine.

Kidorable has impressively made their products functional and cute.  The products are shipped to anywhere in the world and can easily be purchased online.
Any child receiving these products will enjoy it.  Parents will appreciate the affordable prices and will be happy to see how cute their children look in these.

TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace

TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
TIFF Kids International Film Festival is a fabulous experience targeted for children age 3 to 13, although I think everyone will love this.
This year TIFF is introducing a hands-on experience with their new digiPlaySpace, where children and adults can immerse themselves to learn and love new technology.
TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
We spent a fabulous time going through all the cool stations at the digiPlaySpace. It is a wonderful learning opportunity; a good place for families, camps and schools to take children. We will learn new media skills that are playful and interactive, which will encourage creativity.

A little bit of information on some installations:

My children had lots of fun exploring the Vinci tablets. The sturdy handle makes it easy for young children to hold. As parents, we don't have to worry about accidental drops to the tablet. The tablet has a camera and easy to use touch screen and buttons, loaded with storybooks and fun activities.
TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
The Funky Forest is a beautiful display with colourful images. Children learn about the eco-system as they create images of trees with their body, play with the moving virtual water flow and try to touch the bugs and butterflies on the screen.

Adventures in sound, by Aesthetec studio is pretty cool. We have to sing/talk into the can, record our voice and then use the light brush to make unique colourful canvas paint. It is unique because the colour and texture depends on the pitch of the voice.

Sandde 3D drawing is a lovely way to experience 3D drawing and have a feel for how 3D movies are made. There is no need for pencil and paper as children use a device to draw in the air and see designs floating through their 3D glasses. I took the Sandde image on the picture below through the 3D glasses.

The green screen will take us to so many places and experience through a virtual world. It will teach how images for movie animation scenes are made.
TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
There are magic mirrors that will make our image twist, turn and blend.

Room racers up to 4 virtual cars can go around any item we find. We can make our own racetrack by placing real life objects and create obstacles for the cars to drive around. These obstacles can be changed while the race is on to trap the cars. The augmented reality race car game is operated with video game controllers.
TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
TIFF Kids Appcade has lots of educational apps to play with using the new tablets and mobile devices.

Micro-Makers zone is in a separate room. In this station we can explore and learn how robots are made, 3D prints where we can see our 3D models come to life and change real objects to 3D models through 3D scanning.
They had some cool solar powered toys that moved with flashlights.
There were hands-on sections to learn about creative circuitry to make small projects. This area has small parts which are not suitable for young children. Children over the age of 9 and up will benefit from this section.
TIFF Kids digiPlaySpace
We like that everything at the digiPlaySpace is made sturdy and strong keeping children's use in mind, so we can play without worrying about things breaking or damaging. The staff at TIFF was friendly and helpful in answering questions. There are fabulous movies at the TIFF Film Festival until April 22nd. The Summer Camps sessions at TIFF is held from July 3rd to August 31st for campers aged 8 to 17.

digiPlaySpace is located at TIFF Bell Lightbox on 350 King street West, do check out this benefiting experience learn and have fun.

Wee can too edible paint

Wee Can Too is a paint product that is safe to use with our infants and toddlers without the worry of "what if they eat or lick it". I know as a mom, I prefer to use products like Wee Can Too with babies and young children because it is non-toxic and is made from organic food based products. It is gluten free, vegan and dairy free so it could be safely used with children over 6 months.
It gives a lovely opportunity for children to start painting at a young age. The tottle set comes with purple, orange, green, red/pink and yellow. The paint is in a powder form. It is better to put it in a container and mix it with the amount of water you prefer; this way you can use it many times. It is a squeezable container, so we can add the water directly and do a squeeze painting with an older child. If there is any painting remaining it can be refrigerated for up to a month.

The texture and the faint smell reminded me of baby cereal. It is better to use paint clothes with the little ones because the fruit and vegetable extracts i.e. blueberries may stain clothing. Although it is made with safe edible ingredients, doesn't mean it is for consumption.
The sidewalk chalk made with edible products would be perfect for us to have fun with babies outside during spring and summer.

This is a lovely product that promotes "Art from the Start" and We Can Too is a finalist at the Crisbie Awards so vote for it and confirm your vote at the bottom of the page. Every vote counts, as the Honest Company will donate a diaper to Baby2Baby. Have fun with your little messy artists and win your tottle set by following their Facebook and tweets.
