Becel Now Made with Simpler Ingredients

Although, my family and I continue to look for simplicity in the food we consume daily, it is quite difficult to know about all the different ingredients that go into basic kitchen supplies like margarine. Mainly because of this reason, a few years ago I completely stopped using margarine and used butter instead as it is easier to tell what goes into butter. Recently, I got a chance to attend the launch of Becel made with simpler ingredients and learn how margarine is made, as well as ask questions that have changed my perspective about margarine.

I am glad that Becel recognizes what Canadians want, and have worked to come up with a margarine that uses simpler ingredients made from blends of plant and seed oils. They mainly use canola oil and sunflower oil that is a source of good Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats that our bodies need. 

The Becel Original, Becel Buttery Taste, Becel with Olive Oil, and Becel Vegan margarines are now made without artificial preservatives, flavours, and colours. The colour of the margarine now comes from naturally sourced beta-carotene. While talking to a member of Unilever, I was told the company spent about four years to research and experiment, in which they have reduced the amount of ingredients from 16 to 12.

It was neat to watch Rose Reisman - healthy living expert, columnist, TV personality, and author, show how margarine can be made by blending different oils, carrot juice, and other simpler ingredients in an ice cream machine. The new margarine from Becel has the flavour and texture that we like in margarine without the added chemicals and artificial flavours. I like that we can use margarine, and replace it 1:1 for butter in all types of meal preparation from cooking, sautéing, roasting, and baking.

The big bonus for me is using the margarine to spread on bread or use it in a recipe straight out of the fridge without waiting for it to come to room temperature, which is one thing I didn't like when I started using only butter. I found another good reason to use Becel margarine compared to butter is because it is heart healthy with 80% less saturated fat than butter and is considered a source of good fats.

At the event, I got to see Graham Elliot - chef, restaurateur, Masterchef host in action, as he used Becel to make a couple of delicious recipes.

I am looking forward to trying this Garlic and Thyme Basted Strip Steak with Mushrooms and Margarine-Laced Whipped Potatoes at home.

  15. (Becel Now Made with Simpler Ingredients) I will have to try this product sometime soon. I am going to look for Becel with Olive Oil here in our area where I live. If it good enough for Graham Elliot, it's good enough for me! :)
